Market Cap

Price × Bitcoin mined so far

The Bitcoin mined is an estimate from 10-minute blocks, so it can be a few hundred coins out. A target market cap is a what-if, not a forecast. Live prices are provided by CoinGecko. For any other coin, use the Crypto Market Cap Calculator.

How it is calculated

Market cap is the Bitcoin price multiplied by the Bitcoin in existence, so a target market cap divided by the coins gives the price it would take.

  • Market cap = Bitcoin price × Bitcoin mined so far
  • At 21 million = Bitcoin price × 2,10,00,000, every Bitcoin that will ever exist
  • Without lost coins = Bitcoin price × (Bitcoin mined − Bitcoin lost)
  • Price at a target = target market cap ÷ Bitcoin mined; leaving out lost coins, ÷ (Bitcoin mined − Bitcoin lost)
  • Your Bitcoin = your Bitcoin × the price, now and at the target
  • Lakh crore = 1 lakh crore is ₹1,00,000 crore, or ₹1 trillion

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on Bitcoin’s market cap.

The value of all the Bitcoin in existence at today’s price: the price multiplied by the Bitcoin mined so far. With Bitcoin at ₹90,00,000 and about 2.01 crore (20.1 million) BTC mined, the market cap is about ₹180.9 lakh crore. The page estimates the Bitcoin mined for today’s date; type an exact figure from a block explorer if you have one.

Divide the market cap by the Bitcoin in existence. To be worth ₹2,640 lakh crore, about $30 trillion at ₹88 to the dollar, Bitcoin would need to be about ₹13,13,43,284 each, 14.59 times ₹90,00,000. Type any market cap you want to compare with, such as gold’s or a large company’s, from a source you trust; the table shows the price at 2, 3, 5 and 10 times today’s market cap.

Some Bitcoin can never move again because the keys to it are lost, including coins mined in the early years. Estimates run from about 20 lakh to 40 lakh BTC. Leaving them out gives a smaller market cap today, and a higher price for the same target: with 37 lakh BTC lost, ₹2,640 lakh crore would take about ₹16,09,75,610 a coin. No one knows the true figure, so it is optional.

Bitcoin’s rules allow only 21 million coins, ever. The reward for mining halves about every four years, so new supply slows, and the last fraction should be mined around 2140. At today’s price all 21 million would be worth about ₹189 lakh crore. See when the next halving is due on the Bitcoin Halving Calculator.

Enter the Bitcoin you hold. 0.1 BTC is 1 in 21 crore of all the Bitcoin that will ever exist, worth ₹9,00,000 at ₹90,00,000 and about ₹1,31,34,328 at a market cap of ₹2,640 lakh crore. To count in satoshis instead, use the Bitcoin Sats Calculator.

No. Market cap describes Bitcoin’s size at today’s price; it does not predict the price. A target market cap only shows what a price would mean, so treat any target as a what-if. For a single coin other than Bitcoin, use the Crypto Market Cap Calculator.

No. Tax is charged on your own gain when you sell, at a flat 30% plus 4% cess, with 1% TDS on the sale, whatever Bitcoin’s market cap. The Bitcoin Tax Calculator works it out.
